KOLKATA: The RG Kar Hospital rape and murder case has been handed over to the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) by the Kolkata High Court. The court directed that the documents related to the case should be handed over to the CBI immediately.

Many people, including the family of the murdered girl, had approached the court demanding that the case be handed over to the CBI. The court criticized the government and former principal of RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, Dr Sandeep Ghosh. HC directed Sandeep Ghosh, who took over as principal of another college after resigning, to go on a long leave. The High Court opined that the college principal should have been questioned first and said that there is no time to waste and there is a possibility of destruction of evidence. The division bench chaired by Chief Justice TS Sivagnanam asked why a murder case was not registered first and why a case of unnatural death was registered in the incident.

The female doctor, a PG trainee at the government-owned RG Kar Medical College in Kolkata, was brutally raped and murdered on Friday morning. Later in the morning, the body of the female doctor was found half-naked inside the seminar hall of the college. There was a huge protest in the incident after the postmortem report confirmed a brutal sexual assault. Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer of the police, who committed the brutal crime, was arrested. He has been remanded in police custody for 14 days.

According to police sources, the brutal crime took place between 3 am and 5 am on August 9. The post-mortem report states that the woman was strangled to death. The thyroid cartilage was broken due to forceful strangulation. The four-page report also states that the woman had deep injuries on her private parts due to the accused's perverse sexual addiction and brutal genital torture.
