MUVATTUPUZHA: A young man who intended to jump from a bridge into the river to commit suicide fell asleep on the riverbank instead. The police later found him soundly asleep on a water authority pipe near the bridge and managed to rescue him.

The incident occurred yesterday afternoon. The young man, identified as Aseeb, a resident of Palluthuruthi, was reportedly under the influence of alcohol. According to the police, he had declared his intention to take his life by jumping from the old bridge into the river. He crossed the bridge's handrails and positioned himself on the water authority's pipes, preparing to jump. However, before he could take the leap, he succumbed to sleep.

Aseeb ended up using the pipes as a makeshift bed and fell into a deep sleep. Passersby on the bridge noticed him lying precariously on the pipes and immediately informed the police.

When the authorities arrived, they found Aseeb in a dangerous position, seemingly on the verge of falling into the river. The police carefully woke him up and brought him to the station. Fortunately, he had remained in the same position throughout his sleep, which likely saved his life. A slight movement in the other direction could have resulted in a tragic accident, especially given the heavy rain and strong current in the river at the time.

It remains unclear why Aseeb attempted suicide, though it is believed that his actions may have been influenced by alcohol.
