DUBAI: Abu Dhabi-headquartered Lulu Group International has introduced India's payment system Unified Payment Interface (UPI) across all its stores in the UAE. Deputy Chief of Mission at Indian Embassy A. Amarnath conducted the inaugural transaction at Lulu Hypermarket in Abu Dhabi on Thursday.
Indian expatriates and those arriving in the UAE on a visit visa can make payments at all Lulu stores using RuPay cards. Along with this, UPI payments can also be made through Google Pay, Phone Pay and Paytm apps using the QR code. The new payment facility will greatly benefit the more than 10 million Indians who visit the UAE annually.
UPI is a payment system that consolidates multiple bank accounts into a single mobile application. Last February, President Sheikh Mohammed and Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi launched the UPI RuPay card service in Abu Dhabi. Since then, Dubai-based Mashraq Bank and Al Maya Supermarkets have adopted UPI payment systems.
