NEW YORK: The presentation of the Ayodhya Ram Mandir float at the India Day parade in New York City has sparked controversy. Despite objections from several US-based organizations, the float was organized by the Vishwa Hindu Parishad of America. The float, adorned with garlands, featured images of expatriates dressed in traditional attire dancing alongside an Indian flag float.
A few days ago there was a protest regarding the display of the Ram Mandir float. The demand was raised that displaying the float of the temple was anti-Muslim and should be excluded from the event. In this regard, some organizations have written to New York City Mayor Eric Adams and New York Governor Kathy Hochul. The letter pointed out that the Ayodhya Ram Mandir glorifies the demolition of the Babri Masjid and is anti-Muslim. The Council on American Islamic Relations, Indian American Muslim Council and Hindus for Human Rights are among the signatories to the letter.
Meanwhile, Vishwa Hindu Parishad explained that the float represents the Hindu shrine and glorifies the main idol of India and the Hindu community. The Hindu American Foundation also responded that the float was an expression of freedom of speech.
The Federation of Indian Associations, which organized the India Day programme, said the parade represented India's cultural diversity. The organization also stated that floats from different communities are presented. New York City holds its annual parade three days after India's Independence Day.
