NEW DELHI: West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee wrote a letter to the Prime Minister demanding a solid new central law to ensure justice for victims of human rights abuses in the country.
Mamata Banerjee:
"Fast-track courts should be introduced. The trial should be completed within 15 days. More than 90 rape cases are reported every day. Such serious and sensitive issue needs to be addressed in a comprehensive manner through stringent central legislation prescribing exemplary punishment against the persons involved in such dastardly crimes.
It is horrifying to see that almost 90 cases of rape occur daily throughout the country. This shakes the confidence and conscience of the society and the nation. It is bounden duty for all of us to put an end to it so that the women feel safe and secure”
The letter from the West Bengal chief minister comes at an odd time when the state is gripped in protest over the rape-murder of a PG doctor in RG Kar hospital.
