The Kerala Police have issued a public warning regarding the alarming rise in scams involving loan apps and other online frauds. They advise the immediate removal of any suspicious apps that users do not recall installing, as these apps may lead to the theft of sensitive information, including OTPs. The warning was shared through the police's official social media channels.
In an effort to combat online financial fraud, the police have introduced a "golden hour" strategy, urging victims to report incidents within one hour. Complaints can be made to the Cyber Police via the helpline number 1930, or through the official website, www.cybercrime.gov.in. Prompt reporting significantly increases the chances of recovering lost funds.
The rise in online scams has been particularly evident in Kerala. The Kannur Cyber Police recently registered a case in which a woman was defrauded of Rs. 9.58 lakhs after being lured with promises of high profits for completing certain tasks. The scam began with a message on Telegram and after completing three tasks, the woman was paid small dividends to gain her trust. When further promised profits failed to materialize, she realized she had been scammed and lodged a complaint.
In another case, a lawyer, Adv. Shaji from Pothancode, Thiruvananthapuram, lost Rs. 42 lakhs in an online trading scam. The fraudsters contacted him through WhatsApp and manipulated him into making the investments.
