KOZHIKODE: George M Thomas, former MLA of Thiruvambadi and a CPM Kozhikode district secretariat member, has been reinstated into the party after a 14-month suspension. Thomas, who was removed from his position in July last year following serious allegations, has now been included in the Mukkam Thottumukkam branch committee. He attended the branch meeting yesterday, marking his official return to the party.
The suspension was imposed after the party’s internal investigation confirmed multiple allegations against him. These included financial irregularities, party discipline violations and accusations of intervening to protect an accused in a POCSO case. According to the investigation, Thomas allegedly accepted ₹25 lakhs from the accused in the POCSO case and facilitated the transfer of land to a police officer involved in the matter. He was also accused of taking ₹1 lakh from a local intermediary to widen a road and sourcing construction materials from quarry owners for personal use.
In response to these charges, Thomas provided a detailed explanation to the party's inquiry commission, asserting that he had acted in his capacity as an MLA. Despite the serious nature of the accusations, the CPM has decided to reinstate him, a move that has sparked internal debate within the party.
Further complicating matters are allegations made by P V Anwar, another CPM leader, accusing Thomas of engaging in questionable activities both within and outside the party. Anwar’s accusations have added pressure on the party and the government as they navigate the fallout of Thomas’s return.
