KOCHI: The Mulanthuruthy police have booked accused Rajeev under non-bailable sections for hacking his neighbour's pregnant cow to death. The police will present the accused in court today.

The incident took place at around 8.30 am yesterday. Rajeev brutally hacked the four-month-pregnant cow of his neighbour Manoj using an axe. Manoj's wife Sunitha and their son, who rushed to stop the unexpected attack, also sustained injuries. Their health condition is improving.

There were three cows and three calves in the shed. A cow, which produces 10 litres of milk, sustained a neck injury and requires special care, as recommended by the doctor. Similarly, the calves also need special attention. The treatment was provided by a doctor from the Edakkattuvayal Veterinary Hospital. Manoj is a dairy farmer who receives benefits from the panchayat.

Cattle rearing was the sole source of livelihood for Manoj's family. Rajeev killed the cow under the suspicion that its dung was contaminating the well in his house. Prior to this, the panchayat authorities had visited Manoj's house and conducted an inspection following a complaint lodged by Rajeev. According to the Panchayat President, Manoj and his wife Sunitha are rearing the cow with utmost care, adhering to all the necessary standards and maintaining cleanliness.
