KOLLAM: The locals say that trapping women and girls is the main hobby of Muhammed Ajmal, the accused in the case of the murder of a scooter rider in Mynagappally. He dropped out of MSM College, Kayamkulam without completing his graduation. He had gone to Ernakulam with a desire to act in cinema. After roaming around there for months, he left with a rented car. He is also an accused in a sandalwood theft case.
He met Dr Sreekutty, who was on night duty in the casualty, when he went for treatment at a private hospital in Karunagappally. He introduced himself as the son of a police officer. Dr Sreekutty has given a statement that Ajmal had taken Rs 8 lakh from her in addition to the gold.
The two had lunch on the day of the incident at the house of their friend Shambhu in Edakulangara, who had recently returned from abroad. They were on their way to Karunagappally in Shambhu's car when the car rammed into the scooter riders Kunjumol and Fathima at Anoorkavu in Mynagappally at 5.47 pm on Thiruvonam day. Ajmal and Sreekutty managed to escape by driving the car over Kunjumol's body. Fathima, the wife of Kunjumol's brother-in-law who was driving the scooter, is undergoing treatment for injuries.
It is also suspected that Muhammed Ajmal and Dr Sreekutty used chemical drugs. Sasthamkotta DySP Jaleel Thottathil said their blood samples will be sent for clinical examination. Kollam RTO NC Ajith Kumar said Ajmal's driving license will be cancelled.
Ajmal is in remand in Kollam district jail and Dr Sreekutty is in Attakulangara women's jail. The Sasthamkotta police will file an application for their custody today. If taken into custody, the accused will be taken to the ground in Mynagappally where they were sitting and drinking, the Anoorkavu junction where the accident took place, the Sasthamkotta-Karunagappally road, the house near the Karunagappally court where the accused fled after abandoning the car and the house of the friend at Sooranad Patharam where Ajmal was absconding. A search has also been launched for Ajmal's phone.
Case registered against five men who assaulted Ajmal
Police have registered a case against five persons who assaulted Ajmal, who tried to escape after hitting the wall of the house near Karunagappally court. They were the ones who followed Ajmal from Anurkavu on bikes and cars. Visuals of the assault have emerged. The case is based on the statement given by Ajmal to the Sasthamkotta police and a medical examination conducted at Karunagappally Taluk Hospital. Ajmal, who rushed to a nearby house after being beaten up, was asked to leave by the owner. He then escaped by jumping over the wall. Sreekutty, who rushed to the same house, was taken into custody by the Sasthamkotta police.
