THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Minister V Sivankutty said Pathradhipar K Sukumaran made Kerala Kaumudi a fearless voice for democracy, freedom and social progress and that is the hallmark of Kerala Kaumudi even today. He said this while inaugurating the commemoration meeting organized by Kerala Kaumudi Non-Journalists Association at the office of Kerala Kaumudi on the 43rd death anniversary of Pathradhipar K Sukumaran.

Even though it has been four decades since Sukumaran has left us, his name is still in our minds. It has become synonymous with the political, social and cultural structure of Kerala. Pathradipar’s insistence on truth and fairness in news has earned Kerala Kaumudi a reputation for credibility. A guide rather than a newspaper editor, he became a voice of the voiceless. When we remember him, we celebrate the values he stood for and the lasting impact he left behind. He used pen as a weapon for the goals he believed in. Pathradhipar, who gave space to opposing viewpoints were deviating in the Malayalam newspaper work of that time.

Journalism was seen not only as a profession but as a moral responsibility. His decision to stay away from the comforts of a government job was his dedication to the people of Kerala, especially the marginalized sections of the society. Today's Kerala Kaumudi is a reflection of the tireless efforts of Pathradhipar K Sukumaran. His life and the history of Kerala Kaumudi are complementary to each other. He recounted the nights spent sleeping at the press while working late into the night. It is a testament to his commitment at a time when journalism was not an unprofitable enterprise. V Sivankutty added that respect should be shown to the Pathradhipar by upholding the principles of truth, justice and unwavering commitment for the betterment of the society.

Former minister C Divakaran presided over the function. Opposition leader V D Satheesan delivered the keynote speech. Awards were presented to children of the members of Kerala Kaumudi Non-Journalists Association. Hari's son Jagan H and Mathews T’s daughter Marza Mariam Mathews, who scored top marks in the SSLC examination, were awarded the Editor's Memorial Award and Santhosh Kumar K R's daughter Sivanandana AS, who scored the highest marks in the Plus Two examination, was awarded the Press Editor's Welfare Award. Kilimanoor correspondent Anish Manohar also received editor K Sukumaran Memorial Local Journalist Award for best local correspondent. Association President V Balagopal delivered the welcome speech and general secretary K S Sabu the vote of thanks.
