ROME: Italian football legend Salvatore Schillaci, crowed the best player from the 1990 FIFA World Cup, passed away on Wednesday. He was 59. Schillaci died while undergoing treatment at the Palermo Hospital for cancer.
Salvatore Schillaci was instrumental in Italy's third-place finish in 1990, winning the Golden Ball for the World Cup by scoring six goals as a substitute. Known as Toto, he scored seven goals in 16 matches for Italy.
Schillaci started his career in lower-division leagues in Italy. The turning point in his career came when he became the top scorer in the Italian Serie B in the 1988-89 season. He then joined Juventus and won the Coppa Italia and the UEFA Cup in the 1989-90 season.
Salvatore Schillaci retired from international football in 1999, after playing for major clubs like Inter Milan and Juventus in his illustrious career.
