NEW DELHI: Unsafe sex is on the rise in India, according to a report by the World Health Organisation ( WHO). Medical science suggests that it is advisable to use a condom for safe sex. However, statistics show that India is far behind in adhering to the directives for safe sex.
According to estimates based on various reports, only 10 per cent of men in India use condoms during sex. According to health department studies, sterilisation by women for contraception is still the most commonly followed method in India. Only about nine per cent of married women in the country suggest the use of condoms while having sex.
A noteworthy change in this sector is that the use of condoms has increased in rural areas of India as compared to previous years. The Union Territory of Dadra and Nagar Haveli topped the list of condom uses, according to a survey conducted by the National Family Health Department in 2021-2022. About 993 out of every 10,000 couples use condoms.
South Indian states, including Kerala, are far behind in the use of condoms. Tamil Nadu tops the list with only 2.3 per cent of men using condoms. In Karnataka, it is only 1.7 per cent. In Andhra Pradesh, it is 0.5 per cent. When it comes to north India, Uttarakhand tops the list with 15.7 per cent of the population using condoms. In Himachal Pradesh, it is 11.7 per cent. Maharashtra has 5.6 per cent and Madhya Pradesh 4.8 per cent.
