ATM theft team held, one killed in encounter; money taken in container

NAMAKKAL: A six-member team, who robbed SBI’s ATMs in Thrissur has been arrested. The robbery team was caught from near Namakkal in Tamil Nadu. The accused, hailing from Haryana, were arrested while traveling in a container lorry. There was an encounter between the police and the thieves. One person was killed in police firing. A policeman and one of the robbers have sustained injuries.

Weapons including guns have been recovered from the thieves. There is a car inside the container. It is reported that the accused were arrested by the Tamil Nadu Police. They looted three ATMs at Mapranam, Kolazhi and Shornur Road. The incident happened Friday morning between 2:30 am and 4:00 am.


They robbed more than Rs 65 lakh. The gang, who came in a car, used a gas cutter to break open the ATM and made away with the money. This car was found in the container lorry. The CCTV footages of the car in which the thieves were traveling had surfaced.

The accused were wearing masks. None of the cameras in the ATMs were destroyed. The accused first robbed the ATM at Mapranam. Rs 30 lakh was stolen from there. Stole Rs 25 lakh from the ATM in Kolazhi and Rs 10 lakh after smashing the ATM on Shornur Road. In the wake of the incident, checking was tightened on Thrissur borders. The Tamil Nadu Police were also informed as there was a possibility of them entering Tamil Nadu.
