NEW DELHI: A crucial two-day CPM Central Committee meeting will begin today in Delhi. The meeting is expected to decide on the new General Secretary, following Sitaram Yechury's demise. It is said that the proposals in this regard will be forwarded to the Central Committee after the meeting of the available PB.

The issue of Yechury's successor will come up in the Central Committee following the two-day Polit Bureau discussions that ended yesterday. Since the 24th Party Congress is scheduled to take place in Madurai, Tamil Nadu in April 2025 and party conferences have already begun, some Polit Bureau members suggested that a temporary arrangement would suffice. A discussion also took place on handing over responsibilities to a senior leader. Some leaders, including Manik Sarkar, suggested former General Secretary Prakash Karat's name. Another proposal put forth in the meeting was for Polit Bureau members to share responsibilities temporarily.

The available PB will meet today morning, compile the proposals based on the opinions that came up and hand them over to the Central Committee. It is indicated that a final decision will be made on this matter in the two-day discussion.

The controversies, including the revelations made by PV Anvar, are likely to be discussed in the Central Committee meeting. State Secretary MV Govindan will not be attending the meeting today as he will be travelling to Kannur to attend the memorial service of Pushpan, who passed away yesterday.
