THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Motor Vehicle Department (MVD) is on a move to stop issuing printed vehicle license and RC books in the state. A decision has been taken to digitalize both these through the Parivahan site. In the first phase, the printing of driving license and in the second phase that of RC books will be stopped.
The Transport Commissioner stated that the new procedure is based on the fact that there is no need for printing documents when modern technologies are used. The license is presently available by post after two months of passing the driving test. The RC book is received after three months. With digitalization, the license can be downloaded and kept within minutes of passing the test.
The license can be downloaded from Sarathi Parivahan site. Vehicle records can also be stored in Digi Locker in this way. During vehicle inspection, the officer can scan the QR code and check the documents. The documents can also be downloaded and printed for storage. With the digitalization of license and RC book, Kerala is about to become the fourth state to fully digitalize things connected to vehicles.
The printing of license and RC book stopped after the finance department opposed the agreement with the public sector institution ITI. 1.5 lakh for one month's driving license and 3.5 lakhs for three months' RC book have to be given. Taking this into account, the MVD decided to go for digital documents.
