MALAPPURAM: KT Jaleel MLA said in a press conference that customs officials have arrested a prominent Muslim religious scholar from Kerala who went for Haj and brought gold hidden in the cover of Quran.
He is a person who holds the highest position in the religious organisation associated with the Muslim League. The Muslim League was not ready to tell him that he was not qualified to become the leader of the religious organisation. I will give all the details if someone responsible for the Muslim League or the Youth League says that what I am saying is not true. For the time being, I will not reveal his name. Even Muslim scholars have no idea that this is religiously prohibited. Muslim League state president Sadiq Ali Thangal was asked to issue a religious verdict basec on this. If it is difficult to pass a religious verdict, he should resign from the post of Qazi.
I have not said that all Muslims are gold smugglers. The majority of those involved in the cases registered here belong to the Muslim community. Things have to be explained to them. When I was a minister, when baseless allegations related to the gold smuggling were raised, the Congress, the League and the BJP supported it.
Meanwhile, after the statement became controversial, Jaleel came to the fore pointing out that it was misinterpreted. He asked how it would be against Islam if the Qazis were asked to create awareness.
