THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Doppler weather radar and land pressure sensor systems are being introduced in Kerala to prevent loss of life to the maximum extent by anticipating the possibility of landslides and the extent of rainfall. It will be set up in areas prone to landslides. This is with central assistance.

The Doppler Weather Radar will be implemented in March. The land pressure sensor will first be installed in Wayanad. It will be operational before June. It will take three years to set up this system in all the landslide hotspots in Kerala. It will be set up with the help of IIT Roorkee.

The project has been approved by the central government, the Central Disaster Management Authority and the Central Meteorological Department. The project developed to reduce the loss of lives due to natural disasters in the Himalayan region is being implemented in Kerala also as part of the government's intensive efforts.

The Doppler Weather Radar will be installed at the Pazhassi College campus at Pulpally in Wayanad. A team of scientific and technical experts from the Central Meteorological Department has reached the state for this. The project is being implemented rapidly through the direct intervention of the Chief Minister.

Land Pressure Sensor

Landslides and mudslides occur when there is a crack in the earth's natural protective shield due to quarries or construction activities. The pressure sensors can measure the extent of cracks in the protective shields. The possibility of landslides can be predicted by continuously monitoring the data from the sensors.

Doppler Weather Radar

A tool to know the extent of rainfall prior to the launch of rockets. A system to predict the time, extent, and intensity of rainfall by sending microwave waves to the rain clouds and analyzing the signal variations when they return.
