MANGALURU: A Malayali couple has been arrested in connection with the suicide of B M Mumtaz Ali (52), a leading businessman and chairman of private educational institutions in Karnataka. Rahmath and her husband Shuhaib were arrested by Kavur police from Bantwal in Dakshina Kannada.
His brother Hyder Ali complained that some people had blackmailed Mumtaz Ali. Based on this, the couple was arrested. The police registered a case against six people including them. Shafi, Musthafa Abdul Sathar and his driver Siraj are the other accused wanted by the police. The police informed that they had threatened Mumtaz Ali by showing nude pictures and the investigation in the case is progressing.
This gang had extorted Rs 50 lakhs from Mumtaz Ali. Apart from that, a cheque of Rs 25 lakh was also received from him. Hyder Ali said Mumtaz Ali was constantly under pressure demanding more money. The accused hatched a conspiracy to tarnish the image of Mumtaz Ali, who had been active in public for more than thirty years. Police said Mumtaz Ali had hinted to his relatives about ending his life.
Mumtaz Ali, who left home in Baikampady early on Sunday, had sent a WhatsApp message to his family hinting that these six people are responsible for his death. His family after seeing the message launched a search and found his vehicle near the Kuloor Bridge. His body was recovered from the river. Mumtaz Ali is the brother of Janata Dal Secular (S) MLA B M Farooq and former Congress MLA Mohiuddin Bava.
