STOCKHOLM: This year's Nobel Peace Prize has been announced. The Nobel was awarded to the Japanese organization Nihon Hidankyo, an organization of survivors of the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki. They are also known as hibakusha. The recognition included efforts to achieve a world without nuclear weapons and a strong call for the never-use of nuclear weapons.

The Nobel Committee found that hibakusha played a major role in creating and consolidating widespread opposition to nuclear weapons worldwide by creating experiential education campaigns and issuing urgent warnings against the proliferation and use of nuclear weapons.

The committee said hibakusha also helps us globally to understand the loss and suffering caused by nuclear weapons. The committee also said it respects all those who spent time to foster peace despite physical hardships and painful memories.

A total of 286 people were nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize. Of these, 197 were individuals and 89 were organizations.
