Victoria Maaplebeck, a mother and former television and film director, finds herself unemployed after the birth of her son in the touching new documentary 'Motherboard', a standout feature at this year’s London Film Festival.
The film takes us on an intimate journey, beginning with the first scan of her unborn child and follows the mother-son duo over 20 years. Through candid moments captured by Victoria, the audience is drawn into a story that feels as familiar as that of a close friend, showcasing the ups and downs of raising a child.
Absent from the story is the father, who was notably away even at the time of the child's birth. While Victoria was giving birth, he was ice skating in the mountains of northern Scotland and after seeing the child only a couple of times, he soon moved to Spain.
Despite this, the film radiates warmth as we watch the boy grow into a mature, loving man. 'Motherboard' is directed by Victoria Maaplebeck, whose previous work, 'Missed Call', won a TV BAFTA award in 2019.
