TEL AVIV: Reports are claiming that Hamas chief Yahya Sinwar (61) has been killed by the Israeli military. Sinwar was reportedly one of the three killed in an operation at a building in Rafah, southern Gaza, on Wednesday.
Images of the body have also surfaced. The Israeli army collected DNA samples from the body. Israel already has Yahya Sinwar's DNA sample, taken during his imprisonment in Israel from 1988 to 2011. The authorities confirmed Sinwar's death by comparing the DNA samples collected from the body with the samples collected during his imprisonment.
Hamas has not responded yet. A search had been underway in southern Gaza for Sinwar, who went on the run after the Gaza war began. A photo believed to be of Sinwar and his family was found by Israeli forces in a Hamas tunnel.
Shot on head
The body was found with gunshot wounds and a severely damaged head. The body was riddled with injuries. A distinctive scar above the left eye helped confirm the identity of Yahya Sinwar. The facial structure and teeth also matched. The body had military attire and grenades.
