Rs 10 lakh and 50 sovereigns were given as dowry; college teacher commits suicide after harassment by in-laws

NAGERCOIL: A college teacher and a native of Kollam committed suicide in Nagercoil. The dead is Shruthy (25) of Piravanthoor, who committed suicide by hanging. She ended her life at her husband’s house in Suchindram.

Her husband is Karthik, an employee of electricity board in Tamil Nadu. The couple got married six months ago. Reports said her mother-in-law used to harass her for dowry. Shruthy's voice clip has surfaced.

Her conversation with her mother on the phone has come out. The clip said that her mother-in-law is not allowing her to sit with her husband, not permitting her to have food with her husband. Forced her to eat on the plate with left overs. Forgive me mother. My ornaments are with them, must get them back.

Her father was an engineer in the Tamil Nadu electricity board. So, the family shifted to Tamil Nadu. Rs 10 lakh and gold of 50 sovereigns was given as dowry. Her mother-in-law constantly harassed her for dowry. They asked her to go back to her house.

Shruthy had hinted about this to her family and at that time they asked her to adjust. The police in Suchindram had taken a case. The family said they will go forward with the case.
