Shruthi's death; Mother-in-law attempts suicide after police record her statement

NAGERCOIL: Amidst the ongoing police investigation into Kollam native Shruthi's tragic suicide in Nagercoil, her mother-in-law has attempted suicide by consuming poison. The mother-in-law has been admitted to the Asaripallam Medical College in Kanyakumari. Shruthi, a college teacher, had informed her parents that she was ending her life as she was unable to bear the torture by her mother-in-law.

Shruthi's husband is Karthik, an employee of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Board. The couple got married 6 months ago. According to reports, Karthik's mother used to constantly torture Shruthi in the name of dowry. Shruthi's father had lodged a complaint with the Suchindram Police after learning about his daughter's death. Following this, police and RDO Kaleeshwari arrived at the house and recorded the statements of Karthik and his mother. Karthik's mother attempted suicide soon after the police left the home.

Meanwhile, Shruthi's relatives received her body after post-mortem and took it to Coimbatore. Shruthi's father Babu is an officer of the Tamil Nadu Electricity Department in Periyanaikkanpalayam, Coimbatore.

An audio clip of Shruthi talking to her mother has also surfaced. "Mother-in-law is not even allowing me to sit with my husband. She does not allow me to have food with him. I was forced to eat food from the plate with left-overs. I'm sorry mother. She has taken all my jewellery from me. You should get it back," Shruthi said in the voice clip. Shruthi's family had provided a dowry of Rs 10 lakh and 50 sovereigns of gold to Karthik's family as dowry.
