THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Even after two years, the central directive to provide financial assistance of two lakh rupees to the family of guaranteed workers(MGNREGA) who died during work has not been implemented in the state. This is the amount given from the central fund without any liability to the state. Yet bureaucratic indifference is the bane hindering the implementation.

After showing indolence for a long time, the State Employment Guarantee Mission started the file movement only last February. All procedures are moving at a sloth pace since it is not expected of the financially struggling workers to exert any pressure.

This cruelty is delaying the only financial support to the deceased worker’s kin as they are bereft of insurance coverage or other benefits. In Kerala, only Rs 75,000 under the Aam Aadmi Bima Yojana is paid to the worker’s family. In 2022, the Center issued a directive to pay Rs 2 lakh to the concerned in case of death or permanent disability in the course of employment. This scheme is yet to be implemented in the state.

1. Complaint that the current amount of Rs. 75,000 is not being paid on time.

2. Dependents of workers are sent back with lame excuses.

3. Complaints in this regard are before the Employment Security Ombudsman.
