NEW DELHI: Prime Minister Narendra Modi has congratulated Donald Trump on his historic victory in the US presidential elections.

Taking to his official X handle, Modi wrote, 'Heartiest congratulations my friend @realDonaldTrump on your historic election victory'.

Modi expressed confidence in taking the Indo-US ties forward to greater heights as Trump would take over for his second term.

'As you build on the successes of your previous term, I look forward to renewing our collaboration to further strengthen the India-US Comprehensive Global and Strategic Partnership. Together, let's work for the betterment of our people and to promote global peace, stability and prosperity,' Modi wrote.

Polling, which started at 4.30 pm IST yesterday, ended today at 9.30 am IST. Trump has so far won 280 electoral votes, well above the 270 threshold needed to win the presidency.

Notably, this is going to be only the second instance of a president serving two non-consecutive terms in the White House. This is only the second instance and the first in 127 years of a leader winning the presidency after losing once.
