NEW DELHI: The Ministry of External Affairs has stated that Indian diplomats in Canada continue to face surveillance, harassment and threats. External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal highlighted that Indian diplomats have been subjected to such intimidation for over a year. India has called on the Canadian government to take action against those responsible for recent violence at a Hindu temple complex in Brampton.
Jaiswal revealed that India had requested enhanced security for its diplomats at the consular camp where the violence occurred, but the Canadian government has not yet agreed to provide the necessary protection. He further noted that such threats to Indian diplomats are increasing. External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, who has raised the issue with Canadian authorities, expressed hope that the Canadian government would take appropriate action in response to the violence.
In addition, Jaiswal condemned the recent attacks on the Hindu community in Chittagong, Bangladesh, where Hindus were assaulted and their property looted. These incidents followed inflammatory social media posts targeting Hindu religious organizations.
The Ministry also addressed concerns over the removal of coverage from a press conference held by Foreign Minister S. Jaishankar and Australian Foreign Minister Penny Wong. ‘Australian Today’ removed its coverage of the event, sparking protests. Jaiswal criticized this move, calling it an example of Canada's hypocrisy regarding freedom of expression.
