LUDHIANA: A man has been sentenced to 10 years in jail for attempting to commit a human sacrifice to bring back his estranged wife. Dharminder Sapera was sentenced to life imprisonment by the additional sessions court in Ludhiana. He was convicted of kidnapping a four-year-old girl to offer as a human sacrifice as told by a sorcerer.

The incident took place on October 14, 2022. The wife of Dharminder Sapera, a native of Bihar, got into a fight with him and went back to her brother's house in Bihar. Dharminder approached a sorcerer in search of a way to get his wife back. The sorcerer suggested that his wife would return if a child was sacrificed. With this, Dharminder kidnapped the daughter of a labourer named Kalu Ram. Four-year-old Laxmi was kidnapped by Dharminder from her school. On Kalu Ram's complaint, the police checked the CCTV footage of the location and found that it was Dharminder who had abducted Laxmi.

Dharminder was caught while searching for a suitable place to sacrifice the child. The defence argued in the court that the accused had no enmity with the complainant and there were no witnesses to the incident, but the court rejected it and sentenced Dharminder to 10 years in jail and a fine of Rs 10,000.
