72 bundles of Rs 500 notes in bag; undocumented Rs 35 lakh seized from train

KOLLAM: The railway police have seized the cash brought without documents from a train. The incident took place at Punalur in Kollam. Prasannan (52), a native of Alappuzha, has been taken into custody in connection with the case. The accused was nabbed by the railway police when the train, which was on its way to Guruvayur via the Kollam-Sengottai route from Madurai, reached Punalur station at 5 pm on November 7 (Thursday).

The money was kept in 72 bundles of Rs 500 denomination in Prasannan's shoulder bag. Prasannan, who was carrying the bag, was asked about the source but could not get a clear answer. He was taken into custody.

Punalur station house officer G Sreekumar, senior civil officers Shemeer and Saji, civil officers Arun Mohan and Shyam led the inspection. The SHO said the money will be handed over to the Income Tax Department after it is produced in court.

There has been an increase in the smuggling of money without documents in trains via Kollam-Sengottai route. On May 16 at Punalur, the RPF had seized Rs 16.80 lakh that was smuggled in the Chennai Express. S Suresh (65), a native of Kamaraj Salai in Madurai, was taken into custody in this case.
