CHENNAI: South Indian actor Delhi Ganesh, who has acted in more than 400 films including Malayalam, passed away last night at Ramapuram in Chennai. He was 80. He was under treatment for a long time suffering from age related ailments. He is a native of Tirunelveli. He will be laid to rest in Chennai today.
Ganesh, who made his debut in Tamil cinema, has played prominent roles in films in other languages including Malayalam and Hindi. Delhi Ganesh made his film debut with K Balachander's Pattina Pravesam in 1976.
His original name was Ganeshan. After entering films, K Balachander changed his name to Delhi Ganesh. His roles in films like Avvai Shanmughi, Thennali, Sindhubhairavi and Nayagan were also very popular. He was last seen in Indian 2.
Delhi Ganesh's Malayalam films are Dhruvam, Devaasuram, The City, Kalapani, Keerthi Chakra, Pokkiri Raja, Peruchazhi, Lavender and Manoharam. He had given voice for Chiranjeevi, Prathap Pothen, Raveendran and Nedumudi Venu.
He also won the Tamil Nadu State Film Award in 1979 for his performance in the film Paasi. He has also won the Kalaimamani Award in 1994. He had also served in the Indian Air Force officer from 1964 to 1974. He quitted his job for acting. Many celebrities including those from the film industry condoled the death of Delhi Ganesh.
