KOZHIKODE: Two sustained serious burns after a boat in the Beypore harbour caught fire. The fire spread from the boat and two fishermen identified as Thajul Akbar and Rafeeq, natives of Lakshadweep, were injured. The two have been admitted to Kozhikode Medical College Hospital with burns all over their bodies. They suffered 70 percent burns. Reports said they are in a critical condition. The boat was completely burnt.

The fire broke out in 'Ahal Fisheries' boat anchored at Beypore Harbor around midnight yesterday. The fire spread from the engine which was to go fishing in the morning. The gas cylinders in the boat exploded with a loud noise. The boat full of fuel led the fire to spread.

There was a tense situation when the burning part came ashore. Fishermen, who came to know about it, moved the nearby boats to safe places and a major accident was avoided. Firefighters from Meenchanda, Beach, Narikkuni and Mukkam reached the spot.

The boat reached Beypore two days before the accident. It is not clear how the accident happened. The authorities have started an investigation into the incident
