THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Vizhinjam International Port has marked a new era in the development history of Kerala, said Minister V N Vasavan. He also informed that the port has crossed the milestone of handling one lakh TEU (twenty-foot equivalent unit) by last night. TEU is the unit of measurement of cargo capacity. The minister informed this through a Facebook post.
‘The Vizhinjam International Port has ushered in a new era in the development history of Kerala. Four months after the start of the trial run, one after the other, the world's largest cargo ships have arrived at Kerala's shores.
Vizhinjam has also passed the milestone of handling one lakh TEU last night. According to the figures till November 9, 46 ships arrived at the port. 1,00807 TEUs were handled here.
The number of ships that have reached the port is three in July, 12 in September, 23 in October and eight in November.
An income of Rs 7.4 crore has reached the government exchequer in the form of GST. MSC Claude Girardet, Anna and Viviana, among the world's largest cargo ships, have arrived. These will be followed by other guests,’ the minister said.
