NEW DELHI: Justice Sanjiv Khanna will be sworn-in as the 51st Chief Justice of India (CJI) today. Chief Justice of India DY Chandrachud retired yesterday.
President Draupadi Murmu will administer the oath of office to the new CJI at Rashtrapati Bhavan at 10 am. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Leader of The Opposition Rahul Gandhi, Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Supreme Court judges will also be present. Justice Sanjiv Khanna will hold the post of Chief Justice of India for 183 days. His tenure is till May 13, 2025. Justice Sanjiv Khanna became a judge of the Supreme Court in January 2019.
Sanjiv Khanna was born on May 14, 1960 in Delhi. He is the son of Delhi High Court judge Devraj Khanna. He has a law degree from Delhi University. Sanjiv Khanna enrolled as a lawyer in 1983. On June 24, 2005, he became a judge of the Delhi High Court. It was from there that he became a Judge of the Supreme Court.
Sanjiv Khanna was part of more than 117 judgments, including the abrogation of electoral bonds, the central government's decision to abrogate Article 370 which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, the grant of bail to former Delhi chief minister Arvind Kejriwal in liquor case, and the recognition of the reliability of the voting machines.
