NEW DELHI: Sanjiv Khanna has been sworn in as the 51st Chief Justice of India. President Draupadi Murmu administered the oath of office to the CJI at a function held at the Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and other ministers attended the function. Former Chief Justice D Y Chandrachud also attended the function.
Justice Khanna will have a six-month term as the Chief Justice of India. He will retire on May 13 in 2025.
Justice Sanjiv Khanna became a Supreme Court judge in January 2019. He was born in Delhi to high court judge Devraj Khanna on May 14 in 1960. He studied law from Delhi University’s Campus Law College. Enrolled as an advocate in 1983. He became a judge of Delhi High Court on June 24 in 2005. From there, he became a Supreme Court judge through promotion.
Some 117 judgments including upholding the central government's abrogation of Article 370 which granted special status to Jammu and Kashmir, cancelling the election bond, granting bail to former Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal in the liquor case, and upholding the reliability of the voting machine.
