NEW DELHI: China’s recent strides in bolstering its military power are raising alarms not only in India but also among global powers like the United States and Russia. China is set to unveil its new HQ-19 air defense system at the prestigious Zhuhai Air Show, beginning on November 12. The system, considered one of the most advanced of its kind, is already drawing comparisons to America’s Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) and Russia’s formidable S-400 defense systems.
The US's THAAD system is designed to intercept and destroy ballistic missiles in the final phase of their trajectory, offering a critical line of defense against long-range missile threats. Known for its precision and high-altitude interception capability, THAAD is regarded as one of the most advanced missile defense systems globally.
Russia’s S-400 system, widely feared and respected among military powers, can neutralize aerial threats, including fighter jets, drones, and ballistic and cruise missiles, over distances of up to 400 kilometers. India, for instance, operates three S-400 squadrons and has further bolstered its defense capabilities with the indigenous BrahMos and Agni-5 missile systems.
The new HQ-19 is a direct response to these existing advanced systems, marking a significant step in China’s defense capabilities. With features comparable to both the THAAD and S-400, the HQ-19 is engineered for high-level threat interception and offers versatile defense against simultaneous attacks. Its sophisticated "hit-to-kill" technology, akin to that of THAAD, enables it to track and destroy enemy missiles mid-air.
