By-polls: Unaccounted cash of Rs 25 lakh seized in Chelakkara

CHELAKKARA: Rs 25 lakh smuggled without documents have been seized. The incident took place in the premises of Kalamandalam in Vallathol Nagar in Chelakkara constituency. The money was seized from natives of Kulappully. After initial inspection, election and income tax officials clarified that the money carried did not have proper documents.


The police officers on election duty checked the vehicle in the morning and seized the money. The money was kept in a bag at the back of the car. The people in the car were natives of Kulappully. They were going to Ernakulam with Rs 25 lakh. The construction of the house is in progress and Jayan, who was in the car said that the trip was to buy marble required for it.


Jayan said there are documents for withdrawing the money from the bank. However, the income tax officials have started the process of seizing the money, stating that it is not legal to possess such a large amount. The police are presently preparing a mahazar and action will be taken after that. The money is being recovered from the constituency at a time when the bypolls are held tomorrow.
