NEW DELHI: The hearing of the anticipatory bail plea filed by actor Siddique in the rape case has been adjourned for two weeks. Siddique's interim bail will continue till further hearing of the case. The hearing was adjourned following the request of Siddique's lawyer Mukul Rohatgi. Rohatgi had requested the court to postpone the hearing to another day, citing his illness. He also told the court that the police were even asking for the phone that Siddique used in 2016.
Justice Bela M Trivedi, who heads the two-member bench, reiterated the question of why it took 8 years for the complainant to file a complaint against the actor. Kerala government's lawyer Ranjith Kumar said that Siddique was not cooperating with the investigation and even refused to hand over the evidence to the investigation team. The lawyer also alleged that Siddique had deactivated his Facebook account.
The other day, Siddique had submitted an affidavit to the Supreme Court against the report submitted by the state government. In his affidavit, Siddique stated that he was not a powerful individual in the Malayalam film industry and that the police were creating an opportunity for a media trial against him.
Siddique pointed out that the investigation officer's report stated that he had sexually assaulted the woman after promising her a role in a film and that even the complainant had not made such a claim against him. Siddique accused the investigation officer of fabricating stories against him. Siddique stated that his Facebook account had not been deactivated and that he wasn't active on social media due to ongoing cyber attacks. He further stated that he had acted as a hero only in very few films and appeared mostly in supporting roles. He added that the police claim that he has a great influence in the film industry will not stand in court.
