RIYADH: A fashion show by Lebanese designer Elie Saab in Saudi Arabia is now drawing flak from Islamic clerics and followers of the religion. The stage of the show resembled the Kaaba in the Masjid-ul-Haram, considered holy by Islamic believers. The controversial fashion show was held in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Many raged this decision as disrespectful and vented their rage on social media.
Elite models including Jennifer Lopez Camila Cabello and Celine Dion were part of the show. Critics said the program was a gross affront to the Islamic faith and they questioned the kingdom’s dubious move to take the country on a progressive ride through the Saudi reform program called Vision 2030.
“Outrage sparked at Riyadh Fashion Week 2024: The stage, resembling the Holy Kaaba with mirrored effects, is being criticized for disrespecting sacred symbolism as models in non-modest attire walk around. SHAME ON SAUDI ARABIA” wrote a critic on X.
Vision 2030 is a program implemented by the Saudi government aimed at a diverse society and a strong economy. Although the reforms will gain global attention, critics say they undermine Islamic values.
There were reports about Saudi planning to open its first liquor shop in the country.
