KOCHI: A student of Cusat drowned at Cherai beach on Thursday. One among the students, caught in the wave, was heroically rescued by the fishermen. Khalid Muhammad Hashmi (20), a native of Baswaria, Bihar, and a B.Tech 5th-semester student, died. Aditya Ranjan (21), a native of Jharkhand, who was rescued from the fierce waves is now undergoing treatment at Kuzhupilly Medical Trust Hospital.

The incident happened around 5 pm on Thursday. After voting in the university union election, a team of eight students reached the beach. Six among them went for a dip in the sea but the waves were turbulent and difficult to tackle for the novice swimmers. The horrific sight made the two others on shore raise the alarm. The fishermen on shore jumped to the sea and took hold of Aditya while Kahlid went missing in the depths.

Khalid's body was recovered during a search conducted by Azhikode Coastal Police and Munambam Police. The body was sent to Paravur Govt. Taluk Hospital Mortuary.
