THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala government's flagship LIFE Mission, launched in 2017, has provided houses for 4.22 lakh poor families, addressing a critical need for shelter among the state's most vulnerable. The ambitious scheme integrates funds from the state and central governments, as well as contributions from local bodies, aiming to ensure housing for all.
So far, 5.29 lakh families have been identified as beneficiaries by local bodies. Of these, 1,06,624 houses are currently under various stages of construction. Notably, 16,000 beneficiaries belong to the extremely poor category.
Malappuram district leads with the highest number of houses constructed (67,407), while Pathanamthitta has the least (16,344). Kannur tops in terms of project completion, with 83.80% of its identified housing needs fulfilled, followed by Alappuzha, Idukki, Ernakulam and Wayanad.
Additionally, six apartment complexes have been handed over to families without land or houses, while 22 more are under construction. The initiative also benefited from the donation of 20.38 acres of land by individuals and organizations.
