THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala University VC Dr Mohanan Kunnummal has sent the rank list for the 12 guest assistant professor posts in the University of Kerala prepared by the interview board headed by DYFI leader and syndicate member JS Shiju Khan to the Governor. This was after pointing out that the rank list was prepared in violation of the UGC rules. The rank list was approved by the syndicate through a vote earlier. In the case in the High Court in this regard, the VC gave an affidavit that the rank list has been sent to the Governor for consideration.
As per the UGC rules, the chairman of the interview board should be the VC or the professor appointed by the VC. JS Shiju Khan, syndicate member and DYFI district secretary, was made the chairman after rejecting the VC's suggestion to make a senior professor the chairperson. The rank list was approved by a vote on the strength of the CPM majority in the syndicate. While 14 members supported the ruling party, two BJP members opposed it. BJP member PS Gopakumar approached the high court alleging violation of rules.
According to the university law, if there is an error in the syndicate decisions, the VC should send it to the governor for consideration. The decision can now be implemented only after the governor gives his approval. The appointment of guest teachers is for one year and can be extended up to 5 years. The monthly salary is Rs 75,000. All the qualifications for permanent appointment are applicable. Though there are currently 12 vacancies, there will be 50 vacancies within four years.
