Cyclone Fengal makes landfall; flooding in Chennai; flights cancelled

CHENNAI: Cyclone Fengal made landfall. The cyclone made landfall in Puducherry at 5.30 pm. Chennai and the eastern coastal districts of Tamil Nadu are experiencing heavy rains and there was waterlogging in many places. Road and train traffic was disrupted. Officials said that Chennai airport has been suspended till 4 am on Sunday. More than 100 flights have been cancelled and 19 services were diverted. The sea is turbulent.

The loop road from Pattinapakkam to Emerson Point has been completely closed due to strong winds at Marina Beach and Cyclone Fengal. Vehicles will not be allowed. The police have warned the public not to come to the beach. Meanwhile, a migrant worker died after being electrocuted while he was on his way to withdraw cash from an ATM in Paris Corner in Chennai.

Chief Minister MK Stalin has warned people to be alert for heavy rains in the next 48 hours. Educational institutions in eight districts have been closed. It has been proposed to provide work-from-home for IT employees. The public has been banned from entering beaches and amusement parks. The government has set up 2299 relief camps.
