THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a warning for heavy rain and strong winds across several districts in Kerala today. An orange alert, indicating very heavy rainfall, has been issued for Kannur and Kasaragod districts, while a yellow alert is in place for seven districts: Ernakulam, Idukki, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad.

In light of the heavy rain warning, district collectors have declared holidays for educational institutions in Kasaragod, Thrissur, Alappuzha and Malappuram districts. The holiday also applies to tuition centers, anganwadis and madrasas. However, pre-scheduled exams will proceed as planned.

According to the latest radar imagery, heavy rain is expected in isolated areas of Thrissur district in the next three hours, accompanied by strong winds of up to 40 kmph. Similar conditions are predicted in Kannur and Kasaragod districts during the same period.

The weakened Cyclone Fengal has now transitioned into a low-pressure area over north Tamil Nadu and south Karnataka. It is expected to move into the Arabian Sea over northern Kerala and Karnataka later today, according to the Central Meteorological Department.

Expected Impacts

The heavy rainfall and winds may result in:

  • Waterlogging and Traffic Disruption: Roads may become waterlogged and reduced visibility could lead to congestion.
  • Flooding: Low-lying areas and riverbanks are at risk of flooding.
  • Falling Trees: Strong winds may uproot trees, potentially causing power outages and accidents.
  • Structural Damage: Partial damage to houses, huts, and unprotected coastal structures is possible.
  • Landslides: Hilly regions may experience landslides and soil erosion.
  • Adverse Effects on Livestock and Humans: Rain may pose risks to both humans and animals.

Recommendations

  • Traffic Control: Ensure the smooth flow of vehicles in affected areas.
  • Avoid Non-Essential Travel: Residents are advised to stay in safe areas.
  • Preparedness: Coastal communities should secure structures and protect livestock.
