MALAPPURAM: The Cyber Police started an investigation into the incident of a doctored screenshot using Malappuram District Collector VR Vinod's name declaring holiday to schools, now spreading on social media. The screenshots of the announcement of holidays for educational institutions went viral on social media.

After the red alert was announced on December 2 due to heavy rains, a fake Facebook screenshot circulated announcing a holiday for educational institutions. The misleading news appeared on the internet even before the collector could make an official holiday announcement. Collector's official Facebook ID was used in the doctored screenshot.

As the message spread widely, parents started calling officials to enquire about the news. The Collector has now filed a complaint with the Chief of Police. The Collector has requested police to take action under the laws including the IT Act against those who spread false information which creates confusion and misunderstanding among the people and obstructs official performance.
