Out-of-control lorry overturned on children; deceased identified; protest at Panayampadam

PALAKKAD: Eighth-class girl students died in the accident at Panayampadam in Mannarkkad. Four people died in the accident. The deceased have been identified as Irfana, Mita, Rida and Ayesha, students of Karimba Higher Secondary School. One person was injured in the accident.

Eyewitnesses said that the girls were walking on the road after leaving school when the cement lorry hit another vehicle and fell on the children. All four died on the spot. The witness said that two or three children were under the lorry.

The accident happened while the students were returning home after the exam. The lorry carrying cement lost control and overturned. Reports say that the lorry was over speeding. A girl ran into a house neraby when she saw the lorry speeding and narrowly escaped death. Locals say that Panayampadam is a place where accidents occur regularly and that they have complained about this. Locals protested the accident.

The dead bodies of three female students are kept at Thachampara ESAF Hospital and one at Mannarkkad Mother Care Hospital.
