TEHRAN: A 27-year-old Iranian singer was arrested for performing in a virtual concert on social media without wearing a hijab. The singer identified as Parastoo Ahmady was arrested on Saturday at Sari in Mazandaran province. A case was filed against the woman on Thursday for posting the video and followed that, she was arrested.

The singer was seen performing in a sleeveless black dress and her hair uncovered along with four male musicians. There was a post along with the video. 'I am Parastoo, who wants to sing for the people I love. This is a right I cannot ignore. I am singing for the land I love. In this part of Iran, where history and myths intertwine, hear my voice in imaginary concert and imagine this beautiful homeland,' her post said.

The singer’s concert had 1.5 million views. Her lawyer said two of her male musicians Soheil Faghih Nasiri and Ehsan Beiraghdar were also arrested.

Following the 1979 Iranian Revolution, women in Iran were made strict to wear hijab. Many women wear hijab as a symbol of their religious beliefs. However, some consider it as a restriction on personal freedom. There have been various types of protests in Iran recently in this regard. In 2022, the death of 22-year-old Mahsa Amini in police custody, arrested for not wearing hijab, caused widespread protests in Iran.
