KOLLAM: A woman who went to collect drinking water in a canoe drowned after the canoe capsized. The deceased is Sandhya (44), the wife of Puthanthuruthu native Sebastian. The accident occurred at around 8.30 am on Sunday near Palamoottil Kadavu.

The accident occurred while Sandhya was returning with her son Aby after collecting drinking water from Palamoottil Kadavu on the opposite bank of the river. The canoe lost control due to a strong current and collided with a nearby boat, causing it to overturn. Aby managed to cling to the boat and survived. However, Sandhya fell beneath the boat and drowned. Locals rushed to the spot after hearing Aby's cries for help and brought both of them to the shore. Although Sandhya was immediately rushed to the hospital, her life could not be saved. The body was handed over to the family after the post-mortem. The funeral will take place on Monday at 11 AM at the Holy Family Church Cemetery, Mukkad.
