NEW DELHI/DHAKA: Bangladesh wants to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, who resigned as Prime Minister and entered India after student protests. The Interim Government of Bangladesh has officially requested this from India at the diplomatic level. Sheikh Sahina left Bangladesh in August after 16 years of rule.

There were rumors that Sheikh Hasina will go to Britain from India, but she is staying in New Delhi. The national media recently reported that the central government has provided heavy security for the former prime minister of Bangladesh.

Bangladesh has officially informed India that Sheikh Hasina should be extradited based on the arrest warrant issued by the Dhaka-based International Crimes Tribunal (ICT). ICT warrants have been issued against Sheikh Hasina and her accompanying ministers, senior advisors and government officials. 77-year-old Hasina has been charged with mass murder.

India and Bangladesh have an extradition treaty. Bangladesh has now demanded the release of Sheikh Hasina based on this. India's Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri had visited Bangladesh last week. The foreign secretary had informed the interim government of the concern regarding the attacks on minorities in Bangladesh. India has not yet responded to Bangladesh's demand to release Hasina.
