KANNUR: In a shocking incident, a resort employee committed suicide after setting the resort on fire. The deceased has been identified as Palakkad native Preman, who worked at the Banu's Enclave resort near Payyambalam beach in Kannur. The incident took place this afternoon. After setting the resort on fire, he fled the scene and was later found hanging in a well. Preliminary reports suggest that he set the resort on fire in retaliation after being fired from his job.
Preman had been working as a caretaker in this resort for the past 12 years. After opening a gas cylinder, Preman locked two pet dogs in a room and set the place on fire. As the fire spread, the guests staying at the resort alerted the fire force. The blaze fully engulfed a room on the lower floor of the resort. After setting the resort on fire, Preman ran away and was later found hanging in a well at a nearby locked house.
The resort is owned by Vijil, a resident of Varam. Preman set the resort on fire after pouring petrol into the room and opening the gas cylinder. Preman suffered burns while setting the fire. The police and the mayor of Kannur arrived at the scene. Meanwhile, none of the guests staying at the resort were injured. The fire force arrived at the spot and brought the fire under control. Villagers, who saw the fire at the resort, later found Preman's body.
Rooms in the resort were destroyed in the fire. A major explosion in the room and hall on the upper floor caused significant damage. Two units of the fire force from Kannur arrived to extinguish the fire. The body has been shifted to Kannur District Hospital.
