Suicide among tribals on the rise in Thiruvananthapuram; National Human Rights Commission registers case

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The National Human Rights Commission has registered a case based on a report highlighting the rising cases of suicide among tribal communities in the state capital. As per the report, 23 suicides have taken place in 2024 alone. The Commission has directed the Chief Secretary and DGP to submit a detailed report on the matter within two weeks.

In its press release, the Human Rights Commission stated that reports revealed that 138 suicides have taken place among the tribal population in Peringammala panchayat alone between 2011 and 2022. The majority of those who died were aged between 20 and 30. The Commission has asked Kerala to submit details, including the FIRs registered in connection with these incidents. Additionally, it has sought clarification on whether financial assistance has been provided to the families of the deceased.
