SIVAGIRI: Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan stated that the Sivagiri pilgrimage takes place at a time when the teachings that Sree Narayana Guru imparted a century ago continue to remain highly relevant. He pointed out that reports are constantly emerging from various parts of the world about religious thoughts leading to extremism and terrorism. He also mentioned that racial discrimination and the resulting conflicts are causing bloodshed in many parts of the world. The Chief Minister made these remarks while inaugurating the Pilgrimage Conference held in connection with the Sivagiri pilgrimage.

"Revered Swami Satchidananda delivered an important social message today. In line with the progressive legacy of Sree Narayana Guru, he suggested revising the tradition that requires individuals to remove their shirts before entering places of worship. This recommendation holds the potential to become a meaningful social reform, and it is likely that many places of worship will adopt this practice in the future," the CM said.

The Chief Minister also mentioned that no one should be forced, but it is a fact that many practices in our society have changed over time. He acknowledged that the Sivagiri Mutt has effectively led this change. He hoped that not only temples associated with the Sree Narayana tradition but also other religious institutions would follow this example.

The Chief Minister pointed out that some people are now making an organized effort to establish Sree Narayana Guru as the advocate and practitioner of Sanatana Dharma. "During this Sivagiri pilgrimage meeting, we heard such an argument from a speaker. Since Guru envisioned the Sivagiri pilgrimage as a platform for dialogue, it is essential to correct any misconceptions right here," he added.

"Sree Narayana Guru was not a spokesperson or practitioner of Sanatana Dharma. He was a sage who dismantled that dharma and proclaimed a new age dharma, suited for modern times. What is meant by Sanatana Dharma in this context? It is none other than the caste-based dharma, which Guru challenged and overcame, advocating instead for a new humanistic dharma that aligns with the times," the Chief Minister concluded.
